England Debacle: Verdict = Rubbish

Fabio Capello says Germany has a bigger population than the UK so therefore has a bigger pool of players to choose from. Population has nothing to do with it. China wasn't there. Uruguay and Paraguay have populations of 4-6 million and the former is in the semi-finals. No, it's about individual quality AND a commitment to team play.

There is something seriously wrong with the prima donna player culture these days and not just in England- most of the world's top players have been rubbish at the World Cup. I think they are so keyed into their club structure [and its pampering] they are not just unable, but not really bothered about the national team effort. I really believe the Rooney's of this world are just not bothered about playing for their country- it's become a chore- it was written across much of the England player's faces.

This may sound harsh but it needs to be said and addressed. An England team full of players from the Championship would have done no worse; in fact its a fair bet they would have done a lot better. It's time for England managers to accept just because a player is highly paid and successful in the Premiership for their club, does not mean they are an automatic fit for the national team. Capello must cast his net for players wider with a commitment to TEAM work as its basis, not just club effort and celebrity.
